How to Store Medicines Safely at Home

Medicines only work as intended when they are stored correctly. Heat, moisture and sunlight quietly reduce the strength of many common medicines — and a Bangalore summer or a steamy bathroom cabinet is enough to do it. A few simple habits keep your home medicine box safe and effective.
Keep them cool, dry and out of sunlight
Most medicines are happiest at room temperature, in a dry place away from direct sun. A bedroom drawer or a closed kitchen cabinet away from the stove works well. Avoid the bathroom cabinet — the humidity from showers is one of the most common causes of medicines spoiling early.
Some medicines need the refrigerator, and the label will say so. Keep those in the main compartment, never in the freezer or pressed against the back wall, and always in their original container.
Keep the original packaging
The strip, bottle and box a medicine comes in are not just packaging — they carry the batch number and expiry date, protect the contents from light and moisture, and tell you exactly what the medicine is. Loose tablets mixed in a common jar are a mix-up waiting to happen.
Watch expiry dates
Set a reminder twice a year to go through your medicine box:
- Remove anything past its expiry date
- Remove medicines left over from an old prescription that your doctor has changed
- Check that labels are still readable
Do not use expired medicines, and do not flush them or throw them loosely in household waste where children or animals can reach them. If you are unsure how to dispose of something, ask us at the counter — we are happy to guide you.
Keep medicines away from children
Store all medicines out of the reach and sight of children, ideally in a latched box or a high cabinet. Even everyday items like iron tablets and paracetamol can be harmful to a small child in the wrong quantity.
A final word
Good storage is invisible — until the day a medicine does not work the way it should. If a tablet has changed colour, smells unusual, or the strip is damaged, do not use it; bring it to the pharmacy and we will help you check it.
