Monsoon Health Essentials: What to Keep at Home

When the monsoon settles over Bangalore, our counter sees the same pattern every year: viral fevers, stomach infections from contaminated water, fungal skin problems from damp clothes and shoes, and a fresh wave of mosquito-borne illness. A small, well-chosen set of essentials at home means most of these never become an emergency run in the rain.

For fever and seasonal illness

  • A working digital thermometer — check it before the season starts
  • Paracetamol for fever, kept dosed exactly as the label directs
  • ORS sachets for dehydration from vomiting or loose motions
  • A basic cold-and-cough preparation for the family

For stomach and water safety

Most monsoon stomach trouble is water-borne. Drink boiled or properly filtered water, be careful with outside food during heavy-rain weeks, and keep ORS and an anti-diarrhoeal plan ready for children and elders, who dehydrate fastest.

For skin and damp

  • Antifungal powder or cream for feet and skin folds that stay damp
  • Dry footwear rotation — two pairs, alternated, so each dries fully
  • Antiseptic liquid for the small cuts and scrapes that get infected faster in wet weather

For mosquitoes

Standing water after rain is a breeding ground. Use repellents or nets, empty plant trays and coolers weekly, and treat any fever that comes with body pain or lasts beyond two days as a reason to see a doctor promptly — dengue and malaria both circulate in the season.

Keep it stocked, keep it current

Check the expiry dates on last year’s monsoon supplies before the rains begin, and replace anything that has expired. If you would like, bring your home medicine list to Elegant Pharma in JC Nagar and we will help you spot the gaps.

This article is general information only. Persistent fever, signs of dehydration, or illness in infants and elderly family members need a doctor’s attention — please do not wait those out at home.
