How to Check a Medicine's Expiry Date (and Why It Matters)

Every medicine in your home has a quiet deadline printed on it. The expiry date is the last date until which the manufacturer guarantees the medicine’s full strength and safety — and reading it correctly takes ten seconds once you know where to look.

Where to find it

  • On strips: printed or embossed along one edge or across the back, often next to the batch number, in the form EXP: 08/2027
  • On bottles: on the label, or stamped on the base or shoulder of the bottle
  • On boxes: usually on one of the end flaps — always check the box and the strip inside, because they are occasionally from different batches

Embossed dates on foil strips can be genuinely hard to read. Hold the strip at an angle to a light source — the digits catch the light and become legible.

How to read the date

Indian medicines print expiry as month and year: EXP 08/2027 means the medicine is valid through the end of August 2027, not the first of the month. MFG beside it is the manufacturing date. If you see only one date and cannot tell which it is, bring the strip to us — do not guess.

Why expired medicines are a real problem

Past the expiry date, two things happen. First, the medicine loses strength — an antibiotic or a heart medicine at partial strength can fail you quietly. Second, some medicines change chemically as they age, and a few older formulations can become harmful. There is no visual test for either: an expired tablet looks exactly like a good one.

What about vitamins and supplements?

Supplements carry expiry or “best before” dates too, and potency fades the same way — a vitamin D tablet two years past its date may deliver a fraction of its label claim. Treat the date the same as any medicine’s.

What to do with expired stock

Collect expired medicines separately, keep them away from children, and do not use them “just this once” for anything important. When you visit Elegant Pharma in JC Nagar, ask at the counter about safe disposal, and pick up fresh stock while you are here. If you are sorting a whole medicine box, our guide to storing medicines safely at home pairs well with this one.
